Thyroid Health: Research and Doctors

Navigating thyroid issues alongside a pituitary tumor has been one of the most challenging aspects of my health journey. Understanding these conditions, their treatments, and how they impact my overall well-being has become a crucial part of my day-to-day life. In this post, I’ll share my experiences with Hashimoto’s disease, the discovery of a pituitary tumor, and my ongoing efforts to manage my thyroid health.

Early Diagnosis and Managing Hashimoto’s Disease
It all started in 2005 when I tested positive for Hashimoto’s antibodies, marking the beginning of my thyroid struggles. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid, leading to hypothyroidism. By 2010, my condition had progressed to the point where I needed to start Levothyroxine to manage my underactive thyroid.

At first, I saw a general doctor, but as my symptoms worsened—fatigue, weight gain, and nodules developing on my thyroid—I started seeing an endocrinologist who specialized in thyroid health. That specialist helped me better understand the complex role the thyroid plays in regulating energy and metabolism.

The Discovery of a Pituitary Tumor
In 2016, I received another life-changing diagnosis—a pituitary tumor. The tumor added another layer of complexity to my health issues, as the pituitary gland plays a vital role in hormone regulation, including thyroid function. After the tumor was discovered, I needed a new endocrinologist to work with my neurosurgeon and a team of specialists.

During my second surgery, my pituitary gland was removed along with the tumor. This significantly impacted my body’s hormone production, leading to an increase in my Levothyroxine dosage to compensate for the lost hormonal regulation.

Navigating Changes in Endocrinologists
Since the tumor diagnosis, I’ve seen a revolving door of endocrinologists. My first two relocated, and a third one served temporarily until a permanent replacement was found. My current endocrinologist, who has followed my case for some time, hasn’t exactly made the best impression. Her distant demeanor and lack of engagement left me feeling frustrated—especially when I voiced concerns about fatigue and other persistent symptoms.

Researching and Seeking Better Care
Fed up with feeling unheard, I decided to take my health into my own hands. I spent hours researching Hashimoto’s disease and thyroid management. I stumbled across a doctor’s website detailing the importance of specific tests for thyroid health and recommending certain supplements to support the thyroid. Armed with this newfound knowledge, I approached my endocrinologist with the information—only to be dismissed. She claimed these suggestions wouldn’t work for me post-pituitary removal.

Seeking a Second Opinion
That dismissal was a turning point for me. Despite her familiarity with my case, I lost confidence in her approach. I explained to her that my thyroid issues began long before my pituitary surgery, but she wasn’t receptive. That’s when I decided to seek out another endocrinologist in the Ochsner Health System.

After some digging, I discovered that my current endocrinologist specializes in pituitary issues, but another doctor—whom I had seen before—specializes in thyroid diseases. I booked an appointment with the thyroid specialist and plan to discuss my case with both doctors moving forward. This felt like the right step to ensure I’m getting the best possible care for my thyroid.

The Importance of Thyroid Health
The thyroid is essential for regulating metabolism, energy, and many other critical functions in the body. Without a pituitary gland, maintaining my thyroid health is more important than ever. Regular blood tests, medication adjustments, and exploring other treatment options like supplements are all part of my proactive approach to managing my condition.

Conclusion
Living with multiple chronic health issues requires a proactive and persistent approach. It’s not just about following doctor’s orders—it’s about researching, advocating for yourself, and sometimes seeking second opinions to ensure you’re getting the best care. My journey continues as I search for the best solutions for my thyroid health and overall well-being. Thank you for being a part of this journey, and I hope my experiences can help others facing similar challenges.
